Instructions on how to set up AV Media Server on the PS3 with Linksys E3000

I made this guide for those who had the same issue I had with this router. You install the router. Everything is working fine. Now, you go and try to set up the media server as advertised on the Cisco Router. Everything looks good on router’s side but when you go to your PS3, you see “rootpicture” “rootvideo” “rootmusic” or whatever it might be now. You go into these folders and NOTHING is in them, they are empty! SO here is a troubleshoot or guide on how to make sure this feature works. No, Cisco did not Falsely advertise this feature on the E3000. It does work. A Linksys Agent, Kaustubh (71459) and I decided to go through this issue and worked HARD to figure out why so many PS3 users had this issue. If you have been trying to solve this and are network-savy, skip to THE MOST IMPORTANT PART and Conclusion bolded below.

Make sure you are running the latest firmware.

Go Here. Then Click download, select Hardware Version 1.0 (or whatever the latest version is now) then download the latest firmware (Make sure you remember where you downloaded this file, we will access it next).

Now access your router’s backend (make sure not to do this through a wireless network). Connect to your router with the provided Ethernet cable. Then access the backend of your router manually without Cisco Connect. To do so, open a new window on your browser and then access your router’s IP.

Unless you made some changes on your own, the default one Linksys provides is 192.168.1.1. You might be asked for a username and password. Unless you made any changes, this should be “admin” for both fields. Once you have logged in, click and go to Administration section from the top menu (its to the left of Status unless they changed somethings).

Then go to Firmware Upgrade. Click Browse, select the latest firmware file you downloaded then click start upgrade. Don’t mess with anything at this point. The upgrade might take up to 3 mins. Your internet connection will be lost for about 5 seconds. Once the upgrade is done, you will need to go to your router’s IP address and log in again. Check the TOP RIGHT section to see if you successfully upgraded to the latest firmware. DONE!

Make sure the Storage is set up correctly.

Make sure your external HDD is connected to the Linksys E3000. There is a USB connection on the back next to your ethernet cables. I don’t really think it matters when you connect it or how you do it but just in case, I unplugged the power to the router, connected the HDD, waited about a minute, then plugged the power back into the router and powered it up.

Now, I assume you know how to access your router’s backend as explained above in guide #1. Now, go to “STORAGE” (It is to the right of “Security”). Now, you should be in disk management. To tell you the truth, nothing worked for me here at first on a harddrive that already had stuff in it so what I did is FORMAT the harddrive and ERASED EVERYTHING on it and started over. In my case, since my harddrive was empty anyway, I didn’t lose anything. So what I did in short is First, click the box under format disk and format the hard drive you plugged in (like I said, you will lose EVERYTHING when you format).

Once you click Format, Linksys will as you once again, do you really want to format? You hit yes and the next screen will ask you what you want to name the new drive. Type in the name and hit format. It should take about 5 mins tops. Now go to Media Server Under Storage (it is right next to disk). Type in the server name you would like (This is the name you will see on your PS3). And then hit ENABLE on uPnP Sever.

Now the most important part

The most important part I found out you need to do for the PS3 is under database, in the same “Media Server” section, click “Specify folder to scan”. I believe Linksys creates a default section called “public” after you format. We need to GET to this folder so depending on what is your “Current Folder: “, reads now, keep clicking the button “Enter into Folder” until it says “Current Folder: /name of your partition” (name of your partition should be the name you chose when you formatted your HDD. Once you have reached this part, below, you should see a folder called “public”. DO NOT click “Enter into folder”, select the circle radio next to the button. Once you do this, in your Location FIELD, it should read, something like “/foreign_shares/name of your partition/public”. In Display Name FIELD, type in a unique name, I typed PS3. Then Click Save Settings. I didn’t mess with ANYTHING under FTP Server NOR Administration. Also, under Disk, I didn’t mess with “Create a Share” neither.

You are DONE at this point! Put some files in the Harddrive and then go to your PS3 to access them. It should automatically detect your Media Server if connected to the same network. If not, connect to your wireless network with E3000, then under anything, “Picture”, “Music”, “Videos”, there should be “Search/Scan for a media network” icon. Click that. It should find your server. Now click the server (It should have a TV icon with your chosen server name). Press X to access it, you will see rootmusic, root picture, root video. If you are in Music section of the XMB, go to rootmusic and if you put some songs on the harddrive, you should see these songs in there.

CONCLUSION: The BIGGEST issue or problem most people have with this problem is they don’t specify folder to scan under the backend settings of the E3000 Storage under Media Server Section. Once you do this, everything should work FINE!

So far, these methods have been enough to help numerous friends of mine with Linksys E3000 and the PS3. I love this router and everything has worked fine for my streams too. I would recommend it to anyone. It is hard to use ONLY if you are a beginner and don’t want to spend the time and have the patient to work on this issue. If you run into problems, Cisco/Linksys has GREAT Tech Support like Kaustubh (71459) who will be patient enough to go through each step to help you out!

Some issues for Mac Users

P.S. I have a MAC OS X 10.5.8 and it was VERY HARD on knowing how to access this HDD and adding files to it through the wireless network. But its actually easy! Access your router’s IP Address. Go to Storage and then to Administration. You will notice, there is a Server Internet IP Address for your wireless network. Mine was 68.#.###.###. Copy that address. Now go to “Finder” for your MAC. Click “Go” Then Click Connect to Server (Or click an empty area of your desktop and then click Command + K (Hold Command and lick K)). Now type in the Server Internet IP Address here AFTER this statement: “smb://”. So for me, it should read, “smb://68.#.###.###” and press enter. Voila! You should be connected to your wireless network at this point otherwise I don’t think it would work…If you have a PC, there are NUMEROUS Programs you can download online to do this. Search Connect to Server on PC or something like it on Google and you will find some.

But we will get online once a while to share some important stuff with you guys! Today we are starting Maemo Monday. Of course by Maemo we refer to the Nokia’s current open source operating system, Maemo 5. We will cover some issues, problems, questions you guys have had on the Maemo device, N900 and post a video or try to post some answers on here on Mondays!

Tethering through T-Mobile Unlimited Data

Up today is T-Mobile Data tethering through Apple Mac laptops. We happen to have access to both the N900 and a Macbook Pro so the following videos are helpful as to how to enable tethering through the phone (both through USB AND through Bluetooth). Let us know if you guys have any questions but relax and follow through on the video. We live in the West Coast and it the internet tethering through T-Mobile worked surprisingly fast!

Nokia “The Beast” N900 has been getting lots of buzz throughout the net ever since its announcement! After watching videos like these below, I decided to pre-order myself a unit through AMAZON for $549.99 (comes with a $50 Rebate) since they have it the cheapest so far online.
